This blog is designed for Georgia State Students attending the Study Abroad in Tanzania-Zanzibar this May to chat with each other about any questions, suggestions or concerns they may have.
The first clinic I tried was located on Roswell Rd. in Buckhead. They did not take any appointments and they didn't have a clue as to what immunizations I needed for Africa. I ended up going to Travel Well in Piedmont Hospital. They were very helpful and expensive!!! I found out there was a shortage of the Yellow Fever shot and so I had to go to the clinic two weeks in a row. I just finished my Oral Typhoid Vaccine, which is actually cheaper to buy from CVS then Travel Well. As far as the prescriptions for malaria and traveler's diarrhea, malaria is cheapest at Wal-Mart and the traveler's diarrhea is free at Publix. I would suggest starting this process as early as possible. Especially since there is a shortage in the Yellow Fever Vaccine. Also, should you choose to get the Oral Typhoid Vaccine you will need to finish it before starting your malaria medicine.
ReplyDeleteHujambo Marinda, How much would you say you paid for all the immunizations total?
ReplyDeleteHujambo Solette, I paid about $600 for my shots and prescriptions. Of course, the Yellow Fever is the most expensive shot. I may have been able to get away with not getting one shot, but I would rather be safe then sorry.
ReplyDeleteThe Georgia State clinic told me that I needed Hep A, Hep B, yellow fever, and typhoid immunizations, has anyone heard anything different from those?
ReplyDeleteI was told the same thing, in addition to Polio. However, I found out later that I really didn't need Polio because I already had more then enough when I was younger.
ReplyDeleteThose were all the shots that I needed (including the Polio). We will also need to get the Malarone pills to take before, during and after our trip for Malaria prevention (Thanks Miranda for the tip). I lucked out on the expense because I'm an Emory employee and I got immunized FREE with my insurance! Still haven't gotten my Yellow Fever shot because of the shortage, I hope they find some before I leave!!!
ReplyDeleteHey if any of y'all haven't gotten your immunizations yet, try Fulton County Health Department. They were $300 cheaper than another health clinic I called. I'm getting Hep B, Tetanus, Typhoid for $146!
ReplyDeleteMost of the clinics have Yellow Fever now and you need this to travel. Please please make sure that you get Yellow Fever because it may be required at the border to enter into Tanzania and you won't be able to enter without it!!
ReplyDeleteDoes anyone know what the name of the free diarrhea stuff at Publix is called?
